Super Squad Play At Mandurah

It was fantastic to have all players at Mandurah to play agame at 12:30 prior to the Perth Heat V USA Series.

Considering they all had Club games scheduled in the morning, they all showed great commitment by being present for the uniformpresentation and Game.

Thanks to Lachlan Dale General Manager Baseball WA forstepping in for Geoff Hooker T.B.A.W.A. Patron and assisting with thepresentation.

Thank you to Lachy and Steve, the players loved having youout there as 3rd base coaches.

This game was great to watch as 24 players came togetherfor the first time displaying an awesome game of skills and sportsmanship.

We all are part of the Super Squad, Players, FamilyMembers, T.B.A.W.A.

Baseball WA, Perth Heat and Fielders Choice.

In the past weeks the staff at Fielders have been sizingplayers for pants, making my job so much easier. Geoff, please pass on mysincerest thanks to your staff at Fielders.

Super Squad at Perth Heat

The first game for the 2011/12 Super Squad gets underway this Saturday the 22nd at Merlin Reserve in Mandurah.
The game starts at 12.30pm before the Heat play, please come along and support the Perth Heat and at the same time support our Super Squad.

The first of our competitions will start next week so check back next Monday to find out the details and the prizes.

Well it seem like yesterday that we were packing up after the State Champs, but no it was a whole winters sport season away. Yes that's don't look now but it's about to start all over again and I can not wait.

I would like to do a little more reporting of what is happening around the clubs this season, so please if there is something interesting going on in your club just drop me a line at editor@tbawa.org.au

We will be running a couple of competitions this season and I will let you know in the next couple of weeks of our first.

Guess Who

We call this game "Guess Who".
Yes you probably do recognise the gentleman to the left, that's right it's our own Mr Tee-Ball, Warren Lake.
Now you may be thinking "well I guess that must be Warren's son in the circle, .... WRONG!.
Warren's son is the strapping young man fifth from the left in the back row.

Well do you recognise the young man yet ?
The year was 1983 and the photo is of the U/13's Baseball State side.
Yes he is a little older now and has a couple of little ones of his own running around.
Here's a hint, he has done more in the last three years to bring the Tee-Ball Association and
Baseball WA together than anyone in the sports history.
I know it was a giveaway after that hint, yes it is our Patron Geoff Hooker.

The one thing I can't get over is how old photos are so slimming.

Thanks to the efforts of the Perth Cubs and Woodlands Tee-Ball Clubs the City of Perth's Have A Go Day at Langley park was well supported by Tee-Ball.
Thank you to all the players and the Mums and Dads for putting yourselves out and supporting this cause.
It was very important that Tee-Ball was seen to support this, as the City of Perth support us each years at the State Championships.
Special participation certificates will be issued soon to all players.

Super Squad

Whilst some will not agree, I believe we are starting to see a marked difference in this years Super Squad games.
The last few seasons have simply been hit and run where this season with the slightly younger players we are starting to see some great tee-ball. The last game at Baseball park had everything, rundown plays, double plays, some incredible catches as well as home runs.
The players have started to gel within just two games, well done players.
If you would like to see the Super Squad before watching the Perth Heat come down to Baseball Park this Saturday night.

This Saturday night 30th of October will see the first game of the 2010/11 Super Squad, please come a long and support the players.

As well as supporting the Super Squad you will get to see a great game of baseball.
The Barbagallo Perth Heat versus the USA Allstars. Perth Heat won the first two games so I'm sure the USA boys will be out for revenge.
This is the first season of the new league and if we are going to see Baseball grow and prosper in Australia we need to support it. As one of the main sports our children aspire to play lets get behind it.

North West State Champs 2010

Once again another outstanding success.
This years championships were held in Karratha and thanks to Baseball W.A and DSR we were able to send five umpires to assist during the champs. Congratulations must go to Karratha/Dampier Tee-Ball Club for the incredible job they did in hosting the champs. As usual there were some outstanding individual efforts put in, and as much as I would like to mention names I would be too frightened of missing someone out. The towns attending were Karratha/Dampier, Newman, Paraburdoo, Tom Price, Wickham and Port Hedland. There was some unbelievable games played over the weekend by some incredibly talented players. Congratulations must also go to the Coaches, Managers, Scorers, supporters and especially the players.
The talent and manners of the North West players never ceases to amaze me. Also the patients and control of the coaches, it is a very rare thing to be questioned by a coach during this competition.
Attending on behalf of TBAWA was Paul Planken, George Georgis, Peter McCormack, Dave Fenner and Greg Mount-Bryson. The guys said it was an outstanding weekend and when asked for a little gossip everyone was extremely tight lipped saying "what happens in Karratha stays in Karratha". I appears there were a number of things that happened over the weekend but none were printable or they all had enough dirt on one another not to dob each another in.

Caught With His Pants Down

Rumour has it that a certain BWA Talent Identification Officer along with our Chief Coach and Chief Umpire recently attended a meeting in the North West with DSR.
This on its own is no revelation however it has been reported to this editor that the BWA officer attended said meeting without his pants on. Apparently once he realised, he made a hasty retreat apologising and returned a short while later a little more appropriately dressed.
We’re not sure what made him realise he was a little short of apparel on the bottom half (so to speak). It has been reported however that the Chief Coach took about 15 minutes to gather his thoughts before he could go on with the meeting.
I don’t believe he walked through the town to the meeting, apparently it was held at the house the guys were staying at.
We are told the BWA officer is a highly motivated professional and likes to leave an impression.
Well who are we to point the bone, apparently the meeting went well and DSR were so impressed they offered even more than the guys were asking for.
Maybe TBAWA should look at this new approach next time they apply for any form of funding, lets see, Warren without his pants on, perhaps not.
I suppose if it is good enough for a past Prime Minister it is good enough for BWA.

We’re told that having left such a lasting impression with DSR our mystery man cause a little more commotion at the airport. After checking in his bags he settled down to await his flight with our two TBAWA reps when they heard him being summonsed to the check-in counter again. Apparently they looked at one another shook their heads and thought what now and moved to the opposite end of the terminal. Well when he eventually found them again the story was, a bottle of “RUBBING” alcohol broke in his bag and airport staff were a little suspicious of the odder wafting from the bag. All must have been resolved as the three were allowed to board the flight.
I’m told the boys from TBAWA took it all quite well and the only complaint they had was having sore sides from laughing so much.

Whilst we have Jason Dewey’s name we have no intention of printing it for fear of causing him any more ridicule than he has already received.
This could be one of those times when they say “what happens in Karratha stays in Karratha”

Hats off, sorry pants off to BWA, way to leave a lasting impression.

Under 16's Tee-Ball

Latest rumours circulating around is that a metro club is looking at starting teeball for U/16's. I must stress this is a rumour at this stage and I have heard nothing first hand. What is interesting is the reaction of people with statements like, "they won't be allowed to do that" or "that would be illegal" well I'm sorry your wrong. Clubs can do what they want, providing it is legal and within the boundaries of their constitutions. I am sure we will hear more during the off season, personally I look forward to hearing the reasons for the decision should it be true. I would love to read your comments.

Chief Coach says thank you & good by to 2010 Super Squad

On behalf of the TBAWA committee I sincerely thank everyone involved with the super squad, Parents, Family members, Players and TBAWA committee for making season 2009 - 2010 one to remember.
Saturdays windup was all positives but for one negative, today's game is more than likely to be their last.
This time of the season is a sad day for me saying our goodbyes to members of our family.
It was great for the team, yes the team. A team is not just the players and coach, it also includes parents, family members, umpires and TBAWA committee to be a part of the team to come together to make this season and windup one that I know I will be talked about for some time.
Thanks to all parents for the plates of food.
To all Players you were awesome playing tee-ball at the highest level, your clubs should be proud as we are at the way you played each game with the 4Fs of tee-ball.
The day started with a 1 hour tee-ball game, which was full of fun and cheering from the spectators, When a some what older player reach home and scored a run the crowd erupted into cheer when he raised his hand to his first run scored in a super squad game, followed by a 5 star meal and ending with the presentations.
A special thanks goes to the TBAWA team for the assistance not only for today but also during the season.

State Champs 1975 - 2010

The Evolution of State Championships

After attending another terrific State Championships I thought the tee ball followers may be interested in the origins and format of the Tee- Ball State Championships in Western Australia.

In 1975 eight under 10 boys teams (6 from Wembley, 1 from Morley and 1 from Perth - this was all the tee-ball teams playing in Western Australia) played a short competition.

In 1976 with another club entering the competition and a sponsor found the Commonwealth Bank Tee-Ball competition for under 10 boys was held over 7 weeks in February and March.

In 1978 a change of name to Commonwealth Bank Inter-District Tee-Ball competition for under 10 boys was held over 9 weeks in February and March.

On 14th June 1978 the Tee-Ball Association of Western Australia was formed.

In 1979 under 9, under 10 and under 11 boys divisions were used for the first time in the Commonwealth Bank Inter-District Tee-Ball competition held at Langley Park over 8 weeks.

In 1980 a new sponsor, Perth Building Society and the introduction of under 10 and over 10 girls divisions played in the PBS Inter-District Carnival at Langley Park over 8 weeks.

In 1981 the PBS Inter-District Carnival at Langley Park was reduced to 5 weeks and girls over 10 division changed to girls under 13.

In 1983 the name was changed to PBS State Championship Carnival and was held at Yokine Reserve (3 weeks) and Willetton Reserve (2 weeks).

In 1984 returned to Langley Park.

In 1986 the under 10 girls division was changed to under 11 girls.

In 1988 Perth Building Society became the Challenge Bank and so State Championships became the Challenge Bank State Championships.

In 1990 the under 9 boys division became the under 9 (introducing mixed teams).

In 1998 to enable the country teams to participate the Challenge Bank State Championships was changed from five Sundays to a three day weekend.

In 1999 Challenge bank withdrew their sponsorship.

In 2000 an under 12 boys division was introduced.

In 2001 the under 10 boys and under 11 boys divisions changed to under 10 and under 11, and the under 12 boys division changed to under 13.

In 2006 Hospital Benefit Fund took over sponsorship and championships called the HBF Action for Healthy Kids State Championships

In 2010 Hospital Benefit Fund withdrew their sponsorship and we are now looking for a sponsor.

As President of the Busselton Tee-Ball Association I would like to express my sincere thanks to all of the committee for a fabulous job in organizing the State Championships held last weekend.

As a country club it is a huge effort to organize, fundraise, find accommodation, sponsors etc to bring along three teams to play. We have been really blessed with a group of committed parents and children who love the game of tee-ball and are also very proud to play under our club and town's name.

We have had a disproportionate amount of clashes with coaching and umpiring this year, and I would like to thank sincerely Liz Geddis our Country Co-ordinator for sourcing umpires. Thanks to Eileen Flynn and the wonderful men at AK Strikers for stepping in to help out, we are very appreciative; and I would like you to know that the spirit of being part of the tee-ball family is well alight in you all.

State Championships went along smoothly and I was pleased to see all teams taking their turn with the removal of rubbish and diamond marking. The committee members worked tirelessly for many hours, sorting out conflicts, umpiring, rules and many other sundry tasks.

Thanks go to you all for making our experience at States a memorable one again this year.

I would also like to invite all teams to consider the South West Games in Busselton on Sunday 28th March 2010 which will be held at Lou Weston Oval commencing at 9.00 a.m. This is the 25th Anniversary of the games and it has been opened up to all shires to compete. We will have three divisions, Under 9,11 & 13 of mixed and playing under State Championship Rules. The birth date will be as of 31st December 2009 as per our recent Championships.

We envisage that the competition will complete by 4.00 p.m. which will give teams sufficient time to return to Perth after the presentations.

All teams will be playing for Gold, Silver and Bronze medallions and the entry fee is $12 per player. A link to the South West Games website where you can access the registration form is www.swginc.org.au

As a first time coach at States but a parent for a couple of years I was disgusted with the way some coaches handled themselves. I played a team on Sunday that even my kids come of and asked why does the coach from the other team have to do that to us and say that..This coach was laughing at our kids everytime they dropped a catch or misfielded a ball.. If his team was batting and they got a strike he would say to them its ok guys its just a practice game against them. I am sorry but it really disheartened my kids and it was like he was putting them down. What ever happened to coaches praising kids whether they were from there team or the other one..We as coaches are suppose to show and give encouragement at all times not be negative like this..

Would love to know other peoples opinions on this and if they had any dramas with other coaches.

Apart from that thank you for a wonderful state championship weekend.The competition was fantastic.

To the Committee of TBAWA

As a parent of a child who played in the State Championships over the long week end I am bitterly disappointed that as runners up in the XXXX completion they did not receive anything for there HARD efforts in gaining this position in there division. I have also been told by other parents from team there disappointment also let alone the poor children that did all the HARD work. They feel as well as we all do that it is a slap in the face JUST because they are not in the A grade division that they don't count for anything and that they are worthless because they are not in A grade. Some of the comments were why have we even bothered playing this weekend for nothing ,were nobodies because we aren't A graders ect, and these comments came from CHILDREN.
I can understand that TBAWA can not give trophies/medallions to all players but they should recognize not only the winners of each division but also the runners up of each division. It does take a lot to win your division but it also takes a hell of a lot to be runners up also.
I admit that my child as many did not stay for presentation but that was due to having to deal with my CHILD who was informed that the runners up received something this morning to then being informed they received nothing this afternoon and being beside him self to which I do thank you for making life very hard for us today and having to talk him into NOT quitting Tee Ball to which he DID love playing but is in the mind set of (in his words) what's the bloody point.
I do think that this sort of recognition needs to be looked at and also you may get more people interested in staying at presentation. Most people think why stay especially when they have played in the first time slot as our guys did today in the heat for nothing.

Greg as a coach I do not always agree with the decisions umpire make (I guess that's the norm). I have even been known to vigorously discuss their decisions on occasions. However I must say I was generally impressed with the standard of umpiring at this years championships. On one of the occasions when I did question an umpires decision she explained her version of the rule to me and then politely asked me to return to the team bench. Intending to be as much a gentleman as she a lady,I thanked her and walked away, just as well as when I read the rule a little later she was correct. For me it was an enjoyable championship.

ALCOHOL AT CARNIVALS

Dear Editor, Teeball News
I note with some frequency the disturbing fact of clubs holding CHILDREN’S tee ball carnivals and openly advertising their bar will be open. I am not a kill joy and enjoy a drink myself, however I question is this the right time to be serving alcohol. I enquired with a member of the Tee-ball Association as to the moral and legal ethics of this decision. I was told unofficially whilst they were not in favour of it they could do no more than ask the clubs involved to reconsider their decision or at the least open the bar after the games concluded. I was also informed that it may not necessarily be the tee ball clubs running the bars, rather an associated club who share the ground. My major concern is that even in tee ball we are not immune to the ugly parent syndrome, what is likely to happen if one of these people commence drinking during the carnival.
As I stated earlier I am not a kill joy or a stirrer I just have a concern as to value of this decision. I would like to hear what others feel about this matter, am I too old school.

Super Squad Nominations

Whilst watching a recent Super Squad game I overheard some people (not sure if they were club officials or parents)discussing the fact that their club did not nominate players for the Super Squad because the nominations had to be in far to early (only one game into the season)making it to hard to pick who your best players will be. The conversation also went on that it was unfair of the association to call these nominations so early causing children to miss out.
I do not see where the problem is, at my club we know the year before who will be the super squad nomination for the next season. As we only go to U11's we pick the best one or two U10's from the State Champs side the year before, if by chance we have a new player who his brilliant we would nominate them also. Clubs should take a look at this as I know TBAWA are generally disappointed with the amount of nominations received.

State Champs Presentations

I had an interesting conversation with someone the other day. We were discussing having to wait around at the State Championships for the presentations. The person felt it was unfair to be expected to have to wait from 9.30am on Monday morning (their last game) till 1.30pm in the afternoon. Yes I can understand that sometimes especially on a hot day this could be a little inconvenient but we need to look at the overall picture. Some years it is quite embarrassing when presentations come around and you know there have been approximately one thousand to one thousand three hundred players playing over the weekend and all of a sudden you see seated before you around five to eight hundred. You may ask why view it as embarrassing. Well number one is for the sponsors, remember these sponsors help keep your nomination and participation fees down pay for trophies, pennants, ground hire and many other things. To secure sponsors such as the City of Perth you need to inform them of the number of players attending, the number of people attending the event and the advantages to the City for sponsoring the event. Of course when we tell them that there are some twelve hundred players from around the State attending with some four hundred support staff and one thousand five hundred to two thousand parents, that is what they expect to see. It makes it hard to obtain future sponsorship when they think you may have fudged those numbers. Remember these people are special guests over the weekend and also attend the presentations. I also get embarrassed for the sport when I see people leave after the last game as I wonder would they have stayed if their child’s team had of won their division and where due for a trophy. What are we teaching the children, I do not blame the players they generally want to stay.
So before you go to leave after your last game this year, if the above is not a consideration for you then please consider those players who have worked so hard since December, honing their skills at training and carnivals. Be there to cheer them on at the presentations. One day it may be your child’s team who wins and how would you feel if not so many people were there to congratulate him or her.
So please stay after your child’s last game, support the other teams from your club and support all the players at presentations.

Thornlie Carnival

I would just like to thank Thornlie Districts for putting on a great carnival on Sunday. Apart from the heat (which is out of everyones control), it was very well organised from start to finish, and it is not very often that organisers of these events get the praise they deserve. So thank you for your hard work.
I would also like to commend the clubs and all who attended for bringing good spirit and allowing the fun and fair play back into our great sport. We should all be proud of ourselves, our members and players. Good luck to all clubs and their teams for their journey to, and at, State Championships 2010.
And finally on behalf of AK Strikers we hope everyone has a great and safe Christmas and the best New Year.

Teeball Carnivals

You asked for articles so here is one I don't think you will print it as I think you may be involved with the teeball association as I found this blogg attached to the umpires blog. I write to the chief umpir a lot because i see umpires making mistakes all the time and when you try to tell them their wrong they don't want to know

My childs team was one of those that was forced to attend the Teeball Association carnival last Sunday.
It was not our choice to attend however we were told if we did not attend the carnival the club would not be welcome at State. I am happy to give up that long weekend because they play for the championship and against teams who want to be there. I have a problem understanding how a state body can force me to give up my Sunday I give up Saturday morning now . I wonder if this was challenged would it be legal. My child plays teeball on Saturday that is enough we were told that the carnival is for every day teams and kids who may not get to be involved in other carnivals. Do the people who run these associations ever consult with their member clubs I don't believe any clubs would be there if they had a choice. It was stupid playing sport for a whole day in that heat. This is one of the reasons I only let my child play one sport. If this is posted I would like to see what other people think.I am sure many will agree with me and I hope the people who make these decisions take note

In answer to your comment re the lightning carnival, I find it quite amazing to hear a parent so disappointed to give up a day to spend with their child watching him or her do something they really enjoy. Yes I understand you feel you already give up your Saturday mornings but you are no different to thousands of other parents in the metropolitan area and the country who happily do so. It was your choice to agree to your child playing and I am sure that if you had advised your club you were unavailable they would have more than likely been able to replace your child.
The state body did not force you as you stated to give up your Sunday, it was you that agreed to go. Try and challenge it if you wish. Good luck. For your information all clubs were advised they were to put one team, I repeat one team in any age group into the Lightning carnival. As I am not aware of what club you are from I am unsure if your club put in more than one team.
This carnival is for Saturday morning club teams and it gives the children an opportunity to play in a larger competition than they would normally play in.
Another bit of information for you is that alot of clubs put in more than one team, one for instance put in 8 so I gather that member club did not feel forced to participate. Unfortunately we don't control the weather so that one is out of our hands, but again all 76 teams completed the day quite happily.
I do hope other people comment as everyones' opinion is important, negative or positive. I am very happy that the one sport you have chosen for your child is tee ball as I am sure you agree it is a great sport for kids.
Your final comment about the decision makers taking note is this, my committee, all volunteers, do the very best for all children not the chosen few. The clubs vote us in to do a job which I feel we do well. If you feel you could assist us in any capacity, the AGM is held in April, come along and get on the committee, I welcome you to join us.

We would especially appreciate some regular contributors, obviously we ask that if close up photos of players are submitted and / or you want a player named we must receive written permission from both parents ( where available). We will then follow this up through the club as our policy is to abide by the D.S.R photo policy on children.
